Why the top edge
The strip above your desktop is bigger than a menu bar and does exactly as much. Crest started as a two-hour experiment to see if that space could hold something useful without turning into another sidebar, another floating window, another thing competing for room. It didn’t need to. It just needed to know when to show up.
Panels
Seven panels, each a page of the same card. Arrows or a scroll move between them and it morphs to fit. Keep the ones you use, drag them into the order you want.

The small stuff
Not a redesign of how you use your PC: the small stuff that happens forty times a day. None of it deserves its own window. All of it fits in a strip you already know how to reach.
Set it, forget the app exists, glance at the pill when you need to.
Before you blame the Wi-Fi, check whether it's actually your machine.

Settings
Crest works the moment it installs, so none of this is setup: it is what you change once you have lived with it for a week. Every change lands immediately, in every window at once.
Switch off the ones you don't use and drag the rest into the order you want.

How it works
The whole interface is one motion you already make a hundred times a day: moving the cursor to the top of the screen. Crest is a cursor-driven overlay, not another window to manage.
One installer, no setup screen. Crest registers itself to start with Windows and then gets out of the way: there is nothing to configure before it is useful. A thin mark on the top edge shows you where to point until you no longer need it.
A thin strip at the very top edge is the trigger. Touch it and the pill peeks; keep the cursor there for 600ms and the full card opens. Passing through on your way to a tab does nothing.
Chevrons either side of the panel name step through Media, Launcher, Shelf & Notes, Notifications, System, Weather and Calendar, or just scroll over the card. A list that scrolls on its own still scrolls on its own, so reading to the bottom of your notifications never tips you into the next panel. Drag a file at the notch and it jumps straight to the shelf.
Some things do not wait to be hovered. A track starting, a notification arriving, a reminder falling due, a charger going in, or your machine struggling: each drops a small banner down for a few seconds and retracts it. Hover to hold one while you read; keep hovering the ones with a panel behind them and it opens.
Leave the card and it steps back down (expanded, to pill, to nothing) with a short grace period at each step so a slipped cursor doesn't close it. Or switch "Always on top" on and the pill simply stays.
Crest checks for a new version shortly after it starts and again through the day. If there is one, it downloads and installs it on its own: no installer window, no prompts, no wizard. The only sign is a small loader in the notch itself.
Under the hood
The music, the launcher index, the clipboard listener, the drag-out shelf and the load meters are all real Windows APIs called from Rust. The CPU and GPU figures come from the same performance counters Task Manager reads, so they agree with it rather than approximating it.
Nothing renders while the notch is away, and the watchers that have to keep listening (what is playing, what has just arrived, what your machine is doing) settle to a check every two seconds. The meters only speed up while you are looking at them, and the forecast is cached for ten minutes.
Nothing to sign into, nothing syncing to a server you didn't choose. Clipboard entries, notes, reminders and shelved files live in your local app-data folder and go nowhere else. Only two things ever leave the machine: the update check, and the forecast for the town you typed in yourself.
No taskbar icon, no Alt-Tab entry, click-through outside its own bounds: a click meant for the desktop reaches the desktop. It only claims the top of the window stack when there is something on screen to see.

One installer, no setup screen. It’s running in about a minute, and by the second time you nudge the top edge you won’t remember doing it on purpose.
Windows SmartScreen may warn on first run: the installer is not yet code-signed by a paid certificate. Choose More info → Run anyway, or build it yourself from the repo.
Community
There is no support portal and no ticket queue. There is a Discord server where the person who writes the app reads what you post, and a public issue tracker for anything that outlives a conversation.

No. Crest draws its own. It is a transparent overlay pinned to the top edge of your screen (left, centre or right, whichever you pick) so it works on any monitor, including a desktop tower with no notch anywhere in sight.
It sits above them, but only where it is actually drawing. Everywhere else the overlay is click-through, so a click aimed at a maximised window or the desktop passes right through it. It is also skipped from the taskbar and from Alt-Tab.
Anything that reports to the Windows media session: Spotify, Apple Music, Groove, VLC, and media playing in Edge, Chrome or Firefox. Crest reads the same source the volume flyout uses, so if Windows knows about it, Crest does.
Crest reads the Windows notification centre, so anything that lands there drops down from the notch for a few seconds with the app's own icon, then retracts. Hover to hold it while you read. Windows needs "Let apps access your notifications" turned on. Crest tells you in Settings if it isn't. There is also a panel holding everything currently in the centre, where you can open one in full, dismiss it, or clear the lot.
Whichever you want. The Display page in Settings draws the screens you have, arranged the way they actually sit on your desk and numbered to match Windows' own display settings. Click one and the notch moves there. Or switch on "show the notch on every display" and each monitor gets its own, with the same panels and the same banners. If you unplug the screen you sent it to, the notch moves to your main display until that screen is back; you never have to pick it again.
There are five themes: Crest's near-black and violet, cool Glacier, warm Ember, a light Daylight for a bright desktop, and Mono with no colour in it at all. On top of that you can set the accent to any colour you like, and a slider decides how much of your wallpaper shows through. Everything repaints at once: the notch, the tray menu and the settings window.

The only thing you see is a small loader in the notch. Releases are signed, and the full notes for each one are on GitHub and in the app.
Yes: one switch in Settings. Crest turns off the per-app banner for each app that registers one, so a notification appears in the notch and nowhere else. It still lands in the notification centre as normal, and every banner is handed straight back the moment you turn the switch off or quit Crest. Nothing is ever blocked from being delivered.
Both. Settings puts the notch at the left, centre or right of your top edge (on whichever monitor you choose) and the strip you hover to summon it moves with it. "Always on top" keeps the pill resting on screen above your windows instead of hiding, and with it off, a card you open still comes up in front of whatever you are working in, then drops back once it closes. There is also a slider for how transparent the surface is.
The Discord server is the fastest route: bug reports, changelogs and feature requests all live there, and the person who writes the app reads it. Anything that should outlive a conversation belongs on the GitHub issue tracker instead.
There is no account, no sync service, no telemetry and no analytics. Your clipboard entries, notes and shelved files are written to your local app-data folder and stay there. The whole source is on GitHub if you want to check.
It is a Tauri app, so it uses the WebView that ships with Windows instead of bundling a browser. While the notch is away nothing renders, and the watchers that have to keep listening (what is playing, what has just arrived, what your machine is doing) settle to a check every two seconds. The load meters only speed up while the system panel is actually on screen. Idle cost is close to nothing.
Uninstall it from Windows Settings like any other app. Auto-start is registered through the standard Windows mechanism and is removed along with it.
